Poverty Inside-in-Out of â€Å"This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona† Many underprivileged groups such as, African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, just to name a few, often struggle to flourish within society due to lack of resources and lose their identity in assumption of their â€Å"inadequacy†. Sherman Alexie, a Native American activist, reveals the effects of poverty through the life of Victor, a young Native American living in a reservation, in his short story, â€Å"This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona†. Victor, right after he lost job, was notified about his father’s passing. Unable to have the sufficient funds to retrieve his father’s remains from Arizona, he travels alongside his former childhood friend, Tomas Builds-the-Fire. Some have stood out in this field of styling and have managed to keep in mind the concerns of appearance, shape, texture and color, while and still creating masterpieces of art in design. Some of these designs are considered to have come from the country rather than the person with a vision. One such individual who became a legend in this design industry was Giuseppe Bertone. Born in 1914. 2 years after his father Giovanni Bertone set up a carriage building and repair facility in Turin Italy. Few knew at the time that Giuseppe would have a major impact on the world of design. Giuseppi known as Nuccio started to work for his fathers' business at the age of 20 in 1934 that year the Bertone Company exhibited a special-bodied Fiat Ardita, the Superaerodynamica at the Turin Auto Show. I In the years that followed WW II, Nuccio Bertone raced Fiats, OSCAs, Maseratis, and Ferraris, an activity that taught him much about aerodynamics, cooling, and vehicle dynamics. During the 1952 Turin Auto Show the Bertone Company was suffering and in need of capital to continue building the cars they were designing. Bertone watched nervously and wondered if he could even sell one of these special cars. A man came up and not only wanted to buy the cars but wanted to order 100 of each of the 2 models on exhibit that year, this saved the company and opened up the door for Bertone to continue in the design market. Later that same year Nuccio struck an even bigger deal with Alfa Romeo. America First Hand, by Robert D. Marcus and David Burner is written in distinct detail about several accounts by American colonists that are written and relay what it was like in the colonies during the first couple decades. The accounts describe how teenagers, men, and women, all in their own way, questioned society, religion, and government in order to improve themselves and have their own effects on a changing county. Marcus and Burner compare and contrast religious, political, and social issues that were dealt with during the early 1800s. The authors examined the experiences of Hetty Shepard, Ben Franklin, and Eliza Pickeny. Three Americans from very different backgrounds who all had thoughts, actions, and ideas to better themselves and hopefully better their fellow man and society. They show that people should try to better themselves based on his or her own opinions and ideas rather than rely on those of others. Miss Hetty Shepard was a Puritan girl living in New England at the height of colonization and had trouble with the Indians. She recorded a diary to describe the days as they went by. Also along with her daily acknowledgements, Hetty reveals private thoughts and inquires that show her doubts and questions concerning her strict Puritan beliefs. Marcus and Burner show passages from a diary written by Hetty Shepard about what some may call the rebellious mind of young woman. Based on her writings, others may call her the beginning of the independent, or republican, women. Men of the colonial time period did not have it much easier than women.
